All of Rotterdam is covered in litter. Stéphan Lam discovered that the trash follows certain patterns on the streets. Some areas are filled with nitrous oxide balloons and cannabis packaging, others are covered in alcohol bottles, and certain spots are littered with cigarette butts. Lam spent three sessions of five minutes walking through Rotterdam-West, selectively picking up trash from the streets. He then photographed the litter in patterns he designed himself. By categorizing the waste into recognizable groups and presenting it in a thoughtful way, he raises awareness about how trash accumulates and what it reveals about its surroundings. With this confrontational approach, he aims to make people reflect on their own consumption and waste production.
